Alake Market building space to be allotted to private player to sell vegetables, flowers: Mayor

Mangaluru, December 14, 2024: Mayor Manoj Kumar said on Friday that the management of Alake Market — which has not been occupied since its inauguration four years ago — will be allotted to a private player to sell vegetables and flowers.

Speaking to presspersons after visiting the market building, the Mayor said that only four of 25 stalls in the market building have been occupied. All the four stalls sell non-vegetarian items. Stalls selling non-vegetarian items will be shifted to the parking area after making suitable arrangements.

Later, the 25 stalls inside the market building will be allotted to the private player to manage. The private player will be selected by inviting bids and will have to pay the corporation the rent to be prescribed. The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is working on the same.

The Mayor said that the new central market building being constructed under the PPP model is expected to be complete in another five months. Of the total 5 lakh sq.ft area, the MCC will get 1.5 lakh sq.ft area for renting out and the builder of the market building will get 3.5 lakh sq.ft.
