Israel kills Hamas spokesman in Gaza, bombs Syria’s Latakia

Israeli forces continue bombarding Gaza, killing Hamas spokesman Abdel-Latif al-Qanoua and eight other Palestinians in predawn attacks. UN says Israel’s renewed offensive on Gaza has displaced more than 142,000 people in the past week alone.  Israeli forces also continue attacks on Syria, launching several raids in and around the port city of Latakia, according to Syrian media.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 50,183 Palestinians are confirmed dead and 113,828 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. Gaza’s Government Media Office updated its death toll to more than 61,700, saying thousands of Palestinians missing under the rubble are presumed dead. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks and more than 200 were taken captive.

The Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV is reporting more US raids on the northern province of Saada.

It said the al-Sahlain and al-Salem areas were hit in the attacks.

Earlier, the channel reported that two Yemenis were killed in US attacks near the capital, Sanaa.

What to know about US attacks on Yemen

As we’ve been reporting, US bombardment of Yemen has killed two more people overnight.

Here’s a quick reminder of what’s been happening in Yemen:

  • The US renewed its bombardment of Yemen on March 15, days after the Houthis threatened to resume attacks on Israel-linked ships in the Red Sea over the Israeli-blockade of Gaza.
  • In the first day of the campaign alone, at least 53 Yemenis were killed, including five children and two women.
  • Since then, the US has continued to attack Yemen on a nightly basis, killing and wounding more people and destroying civilian infrastructure.
  • The US campaign has drawn more attention in recent days, after a journalist revealed that top government officials shared details of the attacks with him, before they happened, in a group chat on the Signal messaging app.
  • Rashida Tlaib, a US congresswoman, noted the outcry over the security breach has been greater than the deadly bombing campaign.
  • The Houthis had last launched an attack on a commercial ship in the Red Sea in December and had suspended their offensive following the Israel-Hamas ceasefire.
